What We Do

DSW works with people with all forms of disabilities in Uganda.

Home based care project.

We carry out routine home visits monthly under Home based Care Project to selected families of children with disabilities. These visits are designed not only to provide follow-up support but also to create joyful, meaningful, and empowering moments for families raising children with disabilities. During each visit, we take time to engage with the children and their families, sharing experiences, offering encouragement, and listening carefully to their stories, challenges, and needs.

The families we visit have warmly embraced this ongoing initiative, noting that it has helped to reduce discrimination and stigma within their communities. Moreover, the visits have significantly boosted the self-esteem and sense of belonging among persons with disabilities, as they feel loved, valued, and recognized as important members of society.

The number of families we are able to visit is still small compared to our overall target, mainly due to limited financial resources. We therefore appeal to all interested partners to support this project financially so that we can reach more families and improve the well-being of persons with disabilities (PWDs) in a more inclusive manner.

Animal Project

We run an animal project that supports families of persons with disabilities by providing them with livestock to help generate income and supply manure for their gardens. The project operates on a pass-on model, where each family gives the first offspring of their animal to another household. This approach ensures that, over time, every family benefits from the initiative since the available animals are not enough to distribute to all at once.

Through continuous empowerment and support, we aim to reduce dependency and build self-reliance among these families. As the animals grow and reproduce, they create opportunities for income generation, ultimately improving the living standards of the families and the wider community.

Improved Hygiene

We promote and encourage proper hygiene among families of children with disabilities. At Disability Sign World, we believe a child’s room is more than just a sleeping space, it is a place where they should feel loved, valued, and at peace. Through our dedicated efforts, we help improve the bedroom environments of children with disabilities, making them more accessible, comfortable, and child-friendly.

The joy and bright smiles we see on their faces remind us of the impact of our work and strengthen our commitment to creating inclusive and dignified living spaces for every child

Education

At DSW, supporting the education of children with disabilities is one of our main focus each year. Many parents had previously lost hope in educating their children, believing their future opportunities were limited. Through DSW’s dedicated efforts, we challenge and change these perceptions, instilling hope and confidence in both the children and their families.

We provide comprehensive support, including scholastic materials and school fees, enabling children to access quality education alongside their peers. Our mission in this is to empower every child to reach their full potential and ensure that no child is left behind.

Skilling and Empowerment

Our Home-Based Care project has had a profoundly positive impact on the families we visit regularly. We provide training in various skills, including hairdressing, crafts, and related activities, equipping beneficiaries with the ability to create items and earn a livelihood despite their disabilities. For children who may not have the opportunity to return to school, learning practical skills gives them the independence needed to lead fulfilling lives.

In addition, we have mobilized parents and guardians of children with disabilities into groups and trained them to make washing soap using locally available materials and herbs. This cost-effective approach reduces the daily financial burden of purchasing soap, particularly for families living in poverty, and supports them to live independently while also supporting their households
