Bernard from Mwanjari

July 4, 2021 by DSW in Blogs, success story

Akankwasa Bernard is 36 years old from Mwanjari, Kabale Municipality, and Kabale District. He is a double orphan who was born normal but at his early growth and development, they realized he was not functioning well like any other normal child.

His Mother died when he was too young and his father married another woman who refused to stay with Bernard due to his disability. He was put to stay alone in a separate room alone besides the main house.

His elder sister who is married in the next village is the one taking care of him.

He brings him lunch and collects his clothes for washing.

At 36 years old, Bernard is never dressed in a pair of trousers because he cannot undress himself going for toilet. Early morning he crawls from his room to a shade under the tree in their compound where he spends the rest of his day.

With breakfast and supper, Bernard survives on the mercy of Neighbors who once in a while provide something to eat before his elder sister brings lunch and give him supper when he is going to sleep.

His sister is responsible for his lunch only.

His biggest challenge is movement from house to the compound where he needs a wheelchair and Beddings to improve on hygiene and his standards of living. He can’t talk, walk but can stammer a little, hear, understand little and stand for a few minutes or with support.

His sister Lilian says their biggest challenge is Beddings since he urinates on bed and can’t take himself to the toilet. With our Easter outreach, we managed to buy him a bracket and clothes to improve on hygiene and create some Comfort in bed.

We are looking forward to get him a wheelchair, Matrass as per his needs.
